Ways to stay
Personal retreats
A personal retreat is time here on your own schedule: you live with the household, keep its rhythm of practice and meals, and follow a plan of practice and study that is your own.
On a personal retreat you live in the household: you share its meals, its community practice and its events, and the rest of the day is given to the practice and study you have planned. You can come on your own, as a group that keeps a shared schedule, or for a trial stay if you are thinking about residency.
What supports you
Practice
Qualified meditation instructors meet with you during your stay, and we find one for you if you do not have one. We help you shape your plan before you arrive. Six meditation and shrine rooms are open to you, with a Dharma library and an archive of about fifty years of recorded teachings.
A room and meals
Stay in a single or shared room or a dorm bed in the main house, or from May through September in the campground. Breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner are part of every stay, cooked for omnivore, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. Where you will stay and Meals say more.
Room to work
Wifi is included. Private and shared offices can be rented by the week, and a Zoom studio can be booked. Calls, video calls and films are kept to private rooms, offices and the rooms set aside for them; see Electronic devices. Trails, an exercise room and the common rooms are yours to use.
Before you apply
- A regular meditation practice of your own.
- Ideally, at least a week of group retreat already behind you.
- The wish to direct your own retreat. If you have a meditation instructor, talk your plan over with them first.
Planning your stay
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Six weeks before you arrive | Begin, so there is time to plan your retreat with you. |
| A week before you arrive | Ask for a ride from Burlington or Hanover if you need one. There is no public transport or rideshare service to Barnet, and a member of the household can meet you for a fee. |
The rate for each kind of room, and what is refunded if you cancel, are shown when you register; see Registration and cancellation. A day here follows the household's rhythm, set out in A day at Karmê Chöling.
Plan your retreat
Write to us with the dates you have in mind and what you hope to practice, and we will help you plan the stay: info@karmecholing.org or (802) 633-2384.
