Financial aid
Cost should not keep you from practice. Scholarships, matching scholarships from Shambhala centers and a student discount can help; here is what each offers, and when and how to ask.
Financial aid is offered for nearly every program, shared as fairly as we can with special care for those in greatest need. We also encourage you to ask your friends and family, your local sangha and your local Shambhala center for help.
What is offered
- Scholarships, by application.
- Matching scholarships. Karmê Chöling matches a scholarship your Shambhala center gives, up to the program's discounted price. Your center asks for the match at least 15 days before the program begins.
- A student discount for full-time students.
- The Shambhala People of Color Scholarship Fund, which may meet part or all of a program's cost for people of color.
- Shambhala benefits, as the Shambhala practice centers' financial information sets them out.
When to ask
| Aid | Ask by |
|---|---|
| A scholarship or the student discount | Two weeks before the program |
| Shambhala benefits | A month before the program |
| A matching scholarship | Your center asks 15 days before the program |
No aid is given on or after the day you arrive.
Good to know
- Aid of every kind is for the program's own fee. It does not cover accommodation, materials or teaching gifts.
- Discounts, scholarships and other aid cannot be combined.
- With a scholarship or the student discount you stay on the shrine room floor, in a dorm bed or in a tent, unless a physician recommends otherwise in writing.
- If you have a balance of $500 or more with us, or a payment plan behind on its payments, the part of a program's fee a matching scholarship does not meet is paid in full at least 15 days before the program begins.
