Join the household

Volunteer

Work as practice. Give about five hours a day to the kitchen, the house or the land, and receive a room, meals, meditation instruction and a life of practice.

Volunteers join one or more departments. The greatest needs are in Facilities, the Kitchen and Housekeeping. The garden takes volunteers with gardening experience, who work under the Master Gardener, and Guest Services takes volunteers at the front desk who know Microsoft Office and Google's mail and Drive.

The week

  • Work of about five hours a day, five days a week, with two days of your own.
  • At least four of the community meditation sessions each week.
  • At least three rota shifts at the dishes each week.
  • Daily group meditation, weekly teachings, and time for your own practice and study.

A young woman kneels by rows of spinach with a red tub, the white garden gazebo behind her.

What volunteers receive

  • A room: a dorm bed, a tent or the shrine room floor, by season and what is free.
  • Meals.
  • Meditation instruction, with a meditation instructor of your own.
  • Classes in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition.
  • Credit toward Karmê Chöling programs, good for a year.

Before you apply

Volunteers agree to Care and conduct and the Wellness policy, and plan no nights away while they serve. On the application, choose at least one of Facilities, the Kitchen and Housekeeping, and name any other work you would like.
