Teacher
Alice Haspray
Alice began practicing meditation in 1967 with the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki Roshi (author of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind). After Suzuki Roshi's death in 1971, she continued on the path of meditation with Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and was his close student until his death in 1987. She continues now as a student of his son Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and in 2010, the Sakyong appointed her a Shambhala Shastri or senior teacher for Nova Scotia. In early 2013, the Sakyong and Pema Chödron appointed Alice as Gampo Abbey’s Shastri-in-Residence. She has been teaching about meditation for more than 35 years—teaching both Buddhism and Shambhala in North America and also in Chile, Brazil, and Spain. She now lives at Gampo Abbey with her husband Richard, who is the Abbey’s director. This will be the seventh Warrior Assembly that Alice has led.
