Policies
Alcohol, music and pets
In short: no alcohol in the public areas except at special events, no recreational marijuana, and no pets for guests. Music has its places. Here are the guidelines, and why.
Alcohol and drugs
- No alcohol in the public areas, the Main House and Ashoka Bhavan among them, unless at a special event.
- No alcohol anywhere at Karmê Chöling during the first ten days of each dathün.
- Recreational marijuana may not be kept or used here.
- Illegal drugs are never permitted, nor is taking someone else's prescription medicine.
Music
Music is an essential expression of our basic goodness, and it can also distract from meditation. These guidelines hold everywhere at Karmê Chöling, Ashoka Bhavan included, except during Family Camp.
- In your own space, music may be played at any time, at a volume that suits the hour and cannot be heard outside it.
- Outdoors, music may be played only when no program is on the land, unless at a special event. Take your cue from what is around you.
- In the kitchen, quiet music may be played when there is no program, no staff practice day and no one in house retreat.
Music may be welcome at other times too. If you are not sure, ask a member of staff.
Pets
Staff, volunteers, residents, participants and guests do not bring pets, out of care for people with allergies and people who are uneasy around animals. Now and then an exception is made, after the circumstances are considered.
